Why I m Glad to be a Man
For many years women have been discriminated in the workplace, in the home, and in society in general. For this reason, it is easier and more acceptable to be of the male race. Men have it easier in regards to safety, at work, and during life as a whole.
First of all, women are more susceptible to crime. In statistics from the U.S. Department of Justice, women, especially teenage girls, are among the most frequent victims of sexual assault. According to the University of Texas 1 out of 3 women will be a victim of sexual assault , (TCLEOSE). Men are less likely to be targeted in such crimes because they are for the most part much larger and stronger than women are. This simple fact makes women perfect targets for crime.
Men are respected more in the workplace than women tend to be and have more opportunities. There are very few cases where a man filed a lawsuit against an employer for sexual harassment. Men can go to work and be judged by the work that they do where as women on the other hand always claim that they are being harassed to the point they feel so uncomfortable they can t do their jobs. Another easy way to see there is discrimination in the workplace is to look at who holds the top employment positions in most of the world s major companies. Almost all are held by men. Why hasn t a women been president? They rarely even get asked to run. Salaries are yet another example of how much harder it is to be a woman in the workforce. Working women, on average, make only 74 cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts , (AFL-CIO). It is much easier for men to get jobs, receive promotions, and make more money than women.
Lastly women go through many changes that men do not have to go through. During puberty, females undergo maturation of the body and mind at an earlier and much faster rate than males do , (DiGeorge 1580). Puberty causes much stress that males don t have to go through until a couple of years later in life. Women also have the joys of a menstrual cycle, being pregnant and the pain of bearing children.
I think it must be very hard to be a woman in today s world. Men have it easier in regards to safety, at work, and during life as whole. Although the feminist movement is making a great impact on the women s role today, unless scientists can develop a way for men to become pregnant and give birth to the children there are still a lot of things that will never be equal.
