I’m applying for FFDP to realize my study research objectives, which are the following: - learning more about culture, world outlook and cognitive strategies of native English speakers and employ my knowledge in working out effective teaching methods; - studying peculiarities of the whole educational cycle of teaching English at one of the US Universities, especially where computer-based and distance learning methods and technologies are adopted; - studying curriculums and analyze their distinctions from the ones in Russia; - library stocks and other documents for the part of working procedure adopted in the US Higher School learning; - studying computer-based tests and interactive manuals used at Higher School of the US. My reasons for wanting to pursue these objectives with the help of FFDP are: - computer assisted teaching methods are relatively new in Russia and are not adequately elaborated. The knowledge I can get in Russia is primarily theoretical and turns to be rather contradictory and isolated. I regard my being at one of the US universities as opportunity to gain practical knowledge of computer-assisted technologies of teaching English, more particularly Business English, and systematize and extend the fund of knowledge I have in the field; - as I’m currently involved in collecting materials for new interactive manual of Business English for students of All-Russian Distance Learning Institute of Finance and Economics I consider FFDP experience to be useful with regard to studying effectiveness of similar manuals at American Universities; - I’m planning to create a consulting center on the basis of Curriculum and Research Department of the Institute I work at in Orel and hope to study experience of similar projects in America; - I’m collecting materials for comparative research of computer-based teaching technologies used in Russia and worldwide and pin my hopes on Fulbright FFDP to gain some American experience in the field. |

In my early childhood I remember myself dreaming to become a veterinary, then a musician (my mother is the one) and then in my teen-age a teacher (my father is a teacher of Philosophy by his first education). And after finishing secondary school with profound study of English I entered Teacher’s Training Institute and got a diploma of English and German Languages teacher in June 1993. I started teaching Business English at English Department of All-Russian Distance Learning Institute of Finance and Economics. I’ve been working at the above mentioned institute for 15 years and I have never regretted that I chose this career. Since then quite a lot of things happened but I’ll mention the most considerable ones. In 1995 my daughter was born and thanks to the fact that she has always been a healthy and self-dependent child I had some time to continue my education. I passed competitive examinations in Philosophy, Educational Psychology of Higher School, German and Information Science and started preparation for my PhD thesis. On a path leading to defending my thesis In November 2004 I took part in a lot of scientific conferences and published a number of articles concerning mostly problems of Cognitive Linguistics. It was enthralling time as I met a lot of eminent and enthusiastic people. Furthermore years of studying pure scientific theoretical phenomena helped me in my teaching activity. I’m still using cognitive teaching technologies at my work and I like it. But everything is advancing and in around 2000 material and technical basis of the institute permitted to purchase several computers for English Department and I persuaded the institute’s leadership to create Curriculum and Research Department. We consolidated the library’s reading-hall, computer class for teachers and students and methodological supporting materials in one office. And we met with success! Up to now C&R Department is in requisition with teachers and students. I spend much time renovating computer based materials for students of English, keeping a card index of Internet English learning resources, executing subject and information pin-boards, preparing round-table discussions and conferences within the work of English club. After I come back from the USA I plan to create a consulting center on the basis of C&R Department. The main task of the center I see in training teachers of high school and institutes of higher education to use computer assisted methods of teaching English as a foreign language. Recently two more computer classes have been equipped in the institute which gave an opportunity to have computer-assisted practical training regularly and generated a need to gain new teaching experience. I started to investigate what was happening at other educational institutes and universities in Russia and abroad, took part in several conferences, published some articles. In 2007 I took a course of Procedure of Distance Learning Technologies, provided by the leading office of All-Russian Distance Learning Institute of Finance and Economics in Moscow. This year I became a member of NAAL - National Association of Applied Linguistics (Russia) – Russian department of AILA – Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquee and applied for the 43rd Annual Convention TESOL-2009 which is to be held in Denver, USA with the paper proposal titled “Business English Through PowerPointed Educational Projects and Interactive Manuals”. In this proposal I share my and my Business English students experience of team-work on PowerPointing academic projects presentations and making interactive manuals for academic purposes. Although there are many opportunities to raise the level of my professional skills in Russia I still feel critical lack of information. The thing is that computer assisted teaching methods are relatively new here and are not adequately elaborated. The knowledge I can get in Russia is primarily theoretical and turns to be rather contradictory and isolated. I’m applying for FFDP to get opportunity to embody the whole educational cycle at one of the US Universities, where computer-based and distance learning methods and technologies are adopted. I strongly believe that the fund of knowledge I have will be systematized and extended due to the program I’m applying for. I’m furthermore applying for FFDP as I consider this program to be excellent opportunity to learn more about culture, world outlook and cognitive strategies of native English speakers and employ my knowledge in working out effective teaching methods. |
