Lodygin’s study of metal filaments having a high melting point is a work of world importance. He introduced tungsten filaments in a vacuum. He received a patent for his invention in America. The electric lamps that light your rooms every evening have tungsten filaments.
Lodygin died on the 16-th if March, 1923, at the age of 76.

The Institute I study at
I am a first year student of the Chelyabinsk Polytechnic Institute. I study at the extra-mural department. Our Institute was founded on December 15, 1943 and was first called the Chelyabinsk Mechanical-Technological Institute. There were only two faculties: the Tank faculty and the Mechanical-Technological faculty. Only 80 students and 14 teachers began the first academic year. In January 1951 the Institute was reorganized into the Chelyabinsk Polytechnic and later was included into a group of 30 largest higher schools in the country.
At present about 20 000 students and post-graduates study at its day-time, evening and extra-mural departments. The biggest faculties are as follows: Instrument Making, Building Engineering, Automabile and Tractor, Metallurgical, Mechanical-Technological and Power Engineering ones. There are 73 chairs at the Institute training specialists for various branches of industry. The ChPI occupies 5 modern multistoried buildings. Each houses many lecture halls, libraries, reading-halls, a great number of well-equipped laboratories, workshops and a computer center as well. Since 1943 thousands of students have graduated from the ChPI.
The Chelyabinsk polytechnic is one of the largest research centers of our country. Its research activities are aimed at solving the most important theoretical and practical problems in the fields of electronics, construction, metallurgy, transport, etc. The Institute has 16 large research laboratories, which are equipped with up-to-date instruments. The ChPI takes part in international scientific Conferences. It is a regular participant of the Exhibition of Economic Achievements in Moscow. The Institute has scientific contacts with many enterprises in other cities.

Foreign Students in Our Country
There is a wide system of higher education in our country. Our higher schools having considerable experience in the training of specialists are willingly sharing it with other countries. At present a great number of young men and women from 150 countries study in our country. They have come to receive necessary knowledge and then use it for the good of their countries. Most foreign students and post-graduates come for a complete course, but some come for a shorter period. Among the latter are exchange students from the USA, Britain, France, Sweden.
In 1960 the Friendship University named after Patrice Lumumba was founded in Moscow. The basic purpose of the University is to help the countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America to train their own specialists in industry, agriculture, medical service, education and research.
The students spend the first year in the preparatory department, studying Russian and subjects from the secondary school course. Students having no regular school education go through a longer preparatory period. Then the student chooses which department he wishes to do to. All tuition is carried out in Russian, studied in small groups under the guidance of experienced teachers.
The University laboratories and classrooms have all modern facilities and teaching aids. There are all kinds of laboratory instruments, the latest types of equipment, machine-tools, apparatus which are available for use free of charge.
Tuition at the University is free. Besides, the students are given monthly living allowances, free textbooks, free medical aid. Those who want may spend their holidays at rest-homes, camps and health resorts of our country. The University also pays the student’s fare out Moscow and back to their own countries after graduation.

Right to Education
In our country every condition has been provided for bringing education within the reach of the broadest masses of the youth and of all the working people as a whole.
A big “knowledge industry” has been built up in the country. The Citizens’ right to education is embodied in the Constitution and it is in force today. This right is ensured by a number of vital guarantees. Higher education is provided by universities and by specialized and polytechnical institutes.
Students graduate in more than 430 specialities. Tuition rests on a broad scientific basis, lectures and on theory being combined with practical classes. There is a common curriculum for all related faculties in the first and second years. About a million of students taking part in the activities of student scientific groups and industrial design bureaus work under the guidance of their professors.
Studying and working at the same time students get considerable benefits from the state. Training at institutions of higher learning lasts from four to six years. There is the greatest number of graduates. They get jobs in their own fields.
Institutions of higher education and specialized secondary schools are attended by more than 45,000 foreign students from 130 different countries. Curricula take account of the specific conditions in which the graduates will work at home. All establishments of higher education from which foreign students graduate continue to take an interest in their former students after graduation, they organize refresher courses and scientific and practical training which an able them to acquaint themselves with the latest developments in their fields.
