A Career in Fashion Design
People think of fashion designers as creators of elegant gowns for the rich and famous. Some may imagine glamorous models parading down runways. As a matter of fact, only a few achieve this kind of recognition and success. With a lot of hard work and dedication, anyone can succeed in this field.
A high school student that is interested in a career in fashion design should start with art an sewing courses. The student would also benefit from courses in computer-aided design. This system is being used more frequently in the fashion design process. The student should start a portfolio or sketchbook of drawings to record the ideas and designs. After graduation of high school, the student may follow with a two or four year program at a school of fashion design. The student should choose this school with care. The student needs to make sure the program with prepare them the best way possible. This way the student will have the best of chances for great success in this competitive field (Chronicle Guidance Publications, 2 and 3).
The salary of the designer depends on skill, reputation, education and location of business. The designer just starting out may have to begin as an assistant to another designer (Chronicle Guidance Publications, 2). An average salary for a designer in the state of Mississippi could range $20,000 and $28,000 (Choices 2001, 7). If a designer were to open a shop in Mantachie, the salary could range between $27,000 and $40,000 (Yahoo! Careers, 1). More experience designers with drive, ambition and talent may earn quite a bit more, between $50,000 and $100,000 a year (Chronicle Guidance Publications, 2).
There are a small number of job openings in this field in Mississippi and nationwide. The employment change is on the increase with a twenty-seven percent increase by the year 2008. This is a faster than average increase (Choices 2001, 6).
There are around 30,000 fashion designers and assistants in the United States. There are still only a limited number f openings in this field. Students graduating from a college of fashion design may get information from the college placement office. Beginners should accept any job that will help the acquire the skills and experience needed. This may also help in meeting other fashion designers (Chronicle Guidance Publications, 3). Once out of school, the designer needs to develop a personal style and vision; a single piece may help establish a name (First Cut, 2).
A person with creativity, imagination and a flair for a bit of exaggeration could make it in the fashion world. Drive, hard work and long hours are also to be expected if the person really wants to make a career as a fashion designer. The hard work and long hours will definitely pay off in the long run.
